Nurly 500MW Wind Power Station

Country and location:
Republic of Kazakhstan
Location: South Kazakhstan, Almaty Oblast

Background:
Type of the principal GHGs targeted for reduction by the project - CO2

Project category - Renewable Energy
The wind power resources of Kazakhstan and the availability of its own technology for wind energy utilization allow to considerably soften the energy crisis and to reduce anthropogenic environmental impacts from using traditional energy sources. The project benefits from the unique wind conditions of the Chilik corridor, fast input generation capacities and faces the disadvantage of the low prices paid by the developed electric power providers.

Project description:

  • Objectives:
The principle objective of the project is to promote the future development of Kazakhstan's abundant wind energy resources and to reduce GHG emissions by replacing a part of electricity energy produced by the coal Almaty Heat electric Power Stations HEP-2 and HEP-3 and to create the stable and independent energy system of Kazakhstan. Installing wind rotor electric power stations will provide reduction of anthropogenic environmental impacts from thermal power plants and big hydroelectric power plants.
  • Current situation and expected outcomes:
The project is a 500 MW wind farm located on the site at Chilik corridor where the wind resources are extremely favorable. Wind data collected over a period of one year at Djungar Gates and Chilik, by the RISOE Institute of Denmark, have indicated that the wind resource in this area is highly favorable for wind power generation.
  • Outputs:
Construction and operation of the 500 MW Wind Power Station and connection/integration of the wind power station to existing 110 kVA grid lines to provide electricity and transfer it to existing energy system of Almaty and Taldykurgan region.
A Malaysian investor intends to invest the BOT-organized project.
  • Current status:
A pre-feasibility study was done without financial component.

Total project capital costs: 550,0 mln US

Expected environmental benefits including GHG emission reductions (tons CO2 per year or total emission reduction over the project's technical life time (t CO2) assuming project's technical life period- X years)

Annual Emission Reductions since operation of the total capacity -1 540 498 tons of CO2

ERs for Project Life (for 30 years)- 46 214 940 tons of CO2

Compliance with national and local development objectives and contribution to Sustainable development:
The project is expected to comply with all environmental regulations and standards. The realization of the project also assists in creation of new working places, improvement of social atmosphere and economy development. The promotion of the wind power is within the framework of the National Environmental Action plan and Government strategy in energy sector of Kazakhstan till 2030 and obligations under UNFCCC.
