PRESS RELEASE: International and Kazakh experts complete final round of Energy Efficiency Workshops across Kazakhstan in January

Irbaris LLP with the support of Kazakhstan’s Climate Change Coordination Centre (known as C4) is delivering a series of workshops to raise awareness of energy efficiency and accelerate the country’s progress towards a low carbon – high growth economy. The project – “Building Energy Efficiency Capability in Kazakhstan” – is funded by the UK Foreign Office through the British Embassy, Astana whose support is gratefully acknowledged.
In September 2009 Irbaris and C4, with the support of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, engaged with Kazakh business leaders in five different regions across the country in one day workshops to discuss overcoming barriers to the successful implementation of energy efficiency capacities. During each workshop, various examples of energy efficiency programmes from the international oil and gas, mining and manufacturing industries were presented together with some of the technological and operational solutions in use around the globe. Participants were encouraged to examine the business impact of current energy policies in Kazakhstan and the workshops provided an introduction to new energy legislation as well as the potential impact of the Kyoto Protocol on energy efficiency opportunities.
Continued active contribution from Kazakh business is crucial for the successful implementation of energy efficiency plans to support the sustainable development of Kazakhstan. The second round of workshops will take place in Atyrau (19 January 2010), Almaty (20 January 2010), Karaganda (22 January 2010), Pavlodar (25 January 2010).
The second round of workshops will complete the agenda covering Kazakhstan’s emissions trading system, GHG inventory methodology and the development of action plans.
