Kyoto Protocol set to help green economies of eastern and central Europe
(Bonn, 26 October 2006) – The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) today launched a new mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol expected to generate significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions which cause global warming.

With the launch of the Kyoto Protocol’s joint implementation (JI) mechanism, developed countries will be able to acquire carbon credits from greenhouse gas emission reducing projects undertaken in other industrialized countries, in particular central and eastern European transition economies.

These tradable carbon credits can then be used to meet emission reduction or limitation commitments under the Kyoto Protocol.

“JI will generate real projects which will help green the economies of central and eastern Europe. With its launch, we can expect emission reductions in the order of several hundred million tonnes of CO2 by the end of the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol,” said UNFCCC Executive Secretary Yvo de Boer.

President of the Republic of Kazakhstan participated in ceremony of gas turbine station launch at Uralskaya Heat Power Plant

President of the Republic of Kazakhstan participated in ceremony of gas turbine station launch at Uralskaya Heat Power Plant.

The President noted: “The new station was established to ensure electricity and heat supply to the city. Peculiarity of the station is that it is innovative from environmental point of view and emissions into the atmosphere will be very limited. Besides we established new working places. As for the large projects in relation to yesterday’s agreements singed with Russia on Karachaganac and Kazakhstan’s procurement of property in Russia we plan to introduce new energy facilities”.

The Head of the State congratulated all present with successful project implementation.
New gas turbine facility at Uralskaya Heat Power Plant with capacity of 28,6 megawatt was launched with assistance of the Japanese Government.

The project was implemented basing on Agreement signed between Japanese Company NEDO, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ministry of Environment Protection of the  Republic of Kazakhstan and Akimat of Western Kazakhstan region.

This was the first project implemented through Joint Implementation mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol in Central Asia and Climate Change Coordination Centre actively participated in its implementation.

16 SEPTEMBER - INTERNATIONAL OZONE DAY

On December14, 1994, the General Assembly of the United Nations on its 92nd Plenary Session adopted Resolution 49/114 on International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. Thus September 16th - date of signing the  Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer became the World Ozone Day.

Observations of the ozone layer are performed all over the world and scientists state that size of the ozone holes stabilized and in some cases  are decreasing. It is expected that in 50 years the ozone holes will disappear.

Thus the ozone layer protection issue is being solved through integration of joint efforts of governments, NGOs and business structures. This is one of the best examples of economic model for solving environmental issue.

Climate Change Cooperation Centre congratulates all our visitors with this significant day and wishes us all the safe sky above our heads!
